I agree you don't need to douche. The vagina is naturally clean.
Most doctors and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) suggest that women steer clear of douching. All healthy vaginas contain some bacteria and other organisms called the vaginal flora. The normal acidity of the vagina keeps the amount of bacteria down. But douching can change this delicate balance. This may make a woman more prone to vaginal infections. Plus, douching can spread existing vaginal infections up into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

Douching is cleaning/rinsing the inside of the vagina with a special douching syringe that is sold in the pharmacy. There is also a disposible kind (Summers Eve, etc.) It is not recommended, however, as the vagina cleans itself. All you need to do is keep the outside clean and fresh, and this can be done by washing with soap and water every time you shower.

That's another question your mother should have covered in "Birds and Bees 101".
