See if you have a Computer Renaissance in your area... not only do they build their own computers and guarantee them for a year, but they also sell refurbished Dells and other namebrands and guarantee them for a year as well. You can even buy an extended warranty... I bought my last computer from them, and I've been satisfied.

If you are going to by a laptop i suggest :

- sony if you want the best
- HP if you want nearly the best and spend less
- Acer .... is also a good choice.
- Dell / Packard Bell...........WORST choice..

if you're going to buy a desktop pc :
no matter about the brand....it's important to use good quality components...
- good quality mainboard (my fovorite brand ...Asus)
- good quality memory (suggested Corsairs)
- good svga (chipset nvidia or ati)
- hard disk seria-ata II (at least 200/300gb)
- dvdr dual (i like BenQ, but the important thing is that it can
support dao-raw96)
- power supply 500watt or more
- adeguate cooler for the cpu you'll choose

Hmmm, getting a brand name computer is not the best decision... YOu're better off going to a local computer shop and having them build you a CHEAPER, BETTER Computer! Often times they'll work harder for you, and you'll get more questions answered.

The people at circuit city, or best buy... aren't really that helpful. SO! Go and get CUSTOM computer!

Go to Wal-Mart and by the combo package. It will do everything you want without breaking the bank. By the more expensive only if you need the power or just want to impress your friends.

they are all pretty good now. HP pavillion, compaq presario, gateway are some good ones. you can probably get one with 1024 mb of memory and most useful programs already installed for less than $1000. most of those come with speakers, monitor, and color printer. Office depot has good choices, and specials.

All of the "major" name brand computers are sub-par.

However...
Your usage is also sub-par.

By the chepest thing you can get, and consider it a 'disposable' computer.

If you want a GOOD computer, check out companies like alienware.

i have owned dell all my life. They're reliable and have good customer service. Whichever you choose, please have it secured and protect it from the internet baddies out there...IE spyware, adware, viruses, etc.
