couldnot get on a browser for several hours. Pinged my IP address and it sent and recd 4 packets...but when I pinged the DNS it only brought back1 packet.

oh, I had no problem having a Yahoo Messenger connection and I stayed at 100 Mpbs
It stated that the DNS Server Search order failed.

Now it is coming back online then going backoff again.

I did tons of virus scans and trojan searches; hijackthis as well thinking it was a local problem

Now I am thinking it was my ISP's problem?

Not sure what the difference between an IP address and a DNS address is?

Can someone educate me please and hint at what may have been wrong

A DNS server translates a domain name such as yahoo.com into an IP address such as 216.109.112.135.

I'm not sure what your computer's problem is though.

i don't think that there is some issue with your system ... mostly it is due to some problem with the DNS server. for that u don't have to worry .. the ISP will take care of that..
IP address is an identifier for your computer to the Internet
DNS (Domain naming system) is an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP add ress. like the way you have an IP address to identify your computer by the network. communication can be happen only through IP addres. not by the names. so DNS will provide the associated Ip address for any website to your computer for communication. in simple words dns will provide the IP addres of host names for communication to happen
