They should be (afraid) and they are. It's the people who vote for them to be in office. Fear might not be the word, but they sure do respect us (the people). Many examples of governments being toppled by 'people power'.

Our constitution, the legal and philosophical founding of our governmental process, states that WE ARE the government.
It's about time we started acting like it.
Our government shouldn't be afraid of us. All those lying, cheating, manipulating, self-serving politicians SHOULD be terrified. Unfortunately, people would rather complain than act in this country.

That is the way even the US constitution was designed (government by the people for the people), but with the advent of political advertising and corporate media we keep voting against our own interests and keep re-electing the corporate minions.
