I usually take around 15-18 credit hours and only do like 5 hours a week. I usually tend to study a little more during exam weeks though. Most courses don't really have "homework". It is usually just recommended readings from the text book that you can do at your own pace. Most of the time, I am just studying.

For every hour in class you need to spend 3 out of class. I was told this by teachers and when I did that I found it was true. So, if you have a class that meets 3 days a week for 1 hour per class you should spend 9 hours a week on that class. If you do, you should get good grades. There are some people who can get by with less than this and I think they have excellent memories so they don't have to spend as much time on it. At the Junior College level I didn't have to spend as much time on most of my classes.

Teachers normally say 1 hour outside of class for every unit you take per week. So a 5 unit class will take an extra 5 hours of studying outside of class. That normally works good for most people but for some people, they need more or less time.

The rule of thumb is 2 hours a week for every credit hour the class is worth. If it's a 4 credit hour class, 8 hours a week.

well, i just graduated from college this year..
I'd say I had, on average, 5 classes per semester.
I usually spent maybe 1-2 hours a week doing work outside of class.
And I was in one of the more difficult majors at a Big 10 school.
Don't listen to the lies about there being a ton of work, because it's not at all.

For each class, you should study at least 1 hour each, per day. However, if you wish to have a life, just study as much as you think that you need to, in order to get a satisfying grade.

it really depends on what type of classes you take. the general education classes are limited to 2 hours a night. to be honest, some of the gen ed classes are worse. it also depends on what you like. because the ones you like you'll learn better and do more work willingly. you'll discover after the first exam just how much work you actually need to do.
