I would say that being in touch with your elected representatives is among the most important things you can do. They know that for every contact they get from a constituent, there is some multiple of others who feel the same way but did not bother to write.
Sending them e-mail will probably get you on their mailing list; treating you like a supporter even if you have a Nancy Pulosi or Barbara Boxer. A paper letter is a tad more serious though becoming quaint. I tend to send them Fedex Overnight Early-AM Delivery packages and I noticed that once I started doing this I'd occasionally get a non-form-letter in response.
Keeping in mind that the most important thing to a politician is their own power, followed by ego, there is one thing much more influential than any letter....a check. After being invited to a fund-raiser for a candidate I didn't particularly like, I decided to try something new. After a long, content-free speech the rep started to work the floor. When she finally got around to me I held up two sizable checks; one made out to her campaign and another to a competitor in another race. (She didn't have any real competition in her district but her plans seem to include moving to the senate. This would be her competition for that race.) Without appearing to pander, she did listen for about two minutes. It was worth the attempt.
Do whatever you can to make sure your reps know you ARE paying attention to what they are doing.

Impeach Bush and get rid of conservatives. They are the ones using SCARE and FEAR to take away our liberty's and privacy's. If they had their way America would be a police state.
And if you don't have any fears, conservatives will be more then happy to give you some.
Check out what they are up too, click on these links.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

Ask if you have an option to vote for your opinion...if you just have a 2 party choice, and your opinion is not represented, then you dont have real democracy...if you love communism and that is not on the ballot, then you dont have true democracy....

You rationale is very naive! Voting is one way and being involved in your community and the like is another. the decision are not made before the voting is complete.

Get involved in LOCAL politics. Look, it's a forgone conclusion that the national political scene is entirely owned by the corporations. But locally, we still can control what government does to us, and maybe even start to renew the idea that it should be doing things FOR us.

Work at the polls to be sure they are run fairly. Campain for the choices you want, call your congressman (or woman) & leave a message when something you care about is up for a vote. Join groups that tell you when to do that, groups that care about what you do.

Read as much as you can about the workings of government, and when you find something that doesn't sound like democracy, make as big a stink as you can about it.

Vote, whether you don't want to hear it or not, vote. Use your brain when you do and do not vote for a party. Vote for a person who best represents your interest.

We need an armed militia to storm the whitehouse and assassinate Bush and Cheney. We need a legitimate government ASAP.
Too bad it ain't gonna happen.
