I am 38 yrs old, and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 11. 27 yrs ago, they did not know as much about it as they do now. I was told at one point that because my thyroid was normal, I did not need to take my meds any longer....boy was that doctor wrong!!! Whatever your doctor diagnosed you with and prescribed for you is what you will need to take for the rest of your life. Make sure you have your thyroid checked regularly, T3, T4, & TSH tests should always be run to check all possible levels. ALSO, this is VERY important, and MOST doctors do NOT think to tell their patients this...if you started out taking a BRAND NAME prescription brand drug to treat your thyroid condition, you CANNOT switch over to generic!!!! I had 2 pharmacists that worked at different pharmacies and four different doctors and specialists tell me the same thing! BUT if you started off taking generic meds, you are okay. 27 yrs ago, they did not have generics, so I am a name brand girl. Watch out for any new symptoms, sometimes it may take a few different levels of your medicine before they find the correct doseage for you. Make sure you take your medicine on an EMPTY stomach, and do not eat for at least 30 minutes after you take it. If you eat first, you will need to wait two hours. Do not take any herbal remedies or weight loss pills without your doctor's permission! I took herbal weight loss pills, and we still have not been able to regulate my thyroid, and it's been over six months! Take your medicine by it's self!!! Do not take anything else with it besides whatever liquid you are swallowing it down with. The meds are really tricky and will not absorb properly, AND most doctors do NOT tell you all of these small details.

Do not stop taking your medicine just because you feel better, it will make it worse, it is a lifelong medicine. Like I said, I have been taking the meds since I was 11 yrs old!!! (DO NOT take HERBAL thyroid remedies either....they do NOT work, trust me....I have tried it all!!!)
