Dry sump. In theory all the oil is in the oil tank, but the longer it has been sitting, the more oil will be in the crankcase.

Disconnect the scavenger oil line and turn the engine over a few times and all the oil in the crankcase will pump out.

I imagine your FXR has an oil filter somewhere underneath. Change your oil after the engine has been run. Remove the dipstick, place an oil basin under the oil filter, and unscrew the filter. Let it drain as much as it will.

Give a quick tap on the starter button to send the rest of the old oil out of the crankcase. DON'T START THE MOTOR!

You can spray a little of brake cleaner inside the oil tank to clean out the old residue. Let it drain well.

You can purchase a small oil filter wrench that should fit the filter you use.

Place a light coat of fresh oil on the filter gasket, put a little of the oil inside the filter, and then screw it on where the old filter had been. Tighten it by hand and then a little with the wrench--not much is required.

Fill your oil tank to its specifications, but leave it a half-quart low. Start the engine and circulate the oil for a minute. Cut off engine, check your oil, and fill the tank to its top filler line.

Check for oil leaks; your filter may not be tight enough. Have plenty of kitty litter available to soak up any spilled oil.

I always used Harley 20W50 in my 1983 FLH.

You don't drain the crankcase, it only has a few ounces of oil in it. Harley's have what is called a dry sump system which means that the oil goes into a reservoir and is circulated between that and the motor. You may have heard them refer-ed to as oil bags or oil tank. There will be a plug on the oil tank, just unscrew it and let the oil drain out. When your done put the plug back in, take out the dipstick and put fresh oil in. Always change your filter too. If its an EVO engine you should be able to run synthetic oil in it which takes the heat better than conventional oil. Air cooled engines do run hotter than water cooled ones.
