Wow - lots of great choices!
My favorite was "The Kitchen God's Wife". I can't put Amy Tan's books down. I find them very very real and captivating.
"The Catcher in the Rye" is a must-read at some point. It's the ultimate teen classic by many standards.
Brave New World is very very powerful. It will leave you thinking.
You can't go wrong with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", either. It's "easy" reading in a sense, but yet very very memorable and powerful.

If you like science fiction read Brave New World.
The Catcher in the Rye is your best bet overall.
The other one's I have read are more 'chick' books. I love the Kitchen God's Wife, but you might not.

I enjoy reading and I couldn't finish the first few pages of the color purple (the movie was great though!). The catcher in the rye was alright if you don't mind someone whining the whole time. I haven't read any of the other ones

The Catcher in the Rye was an awesome book about Holden Caulfield's coming of age.

Brave New World, it is very thought provoking. Everyone in the world is Comotose, its like a "r" rated version of 1984

With Brave New World you can't miss...
Beloved and The Color Purple are emotional rides, dealing with black women and thier problems....

I haven't read most of those books, but I do know that Brave New World is a good read and very thought provoking.

Its one of my favorite books.
