The best game of all time is no question Baten Kaitos:Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (exclusively for GameCube). You've probably never heard of it, but it's an RPG that uses a card-based battle system. You can carry around blank cards to capture the essence of things (like water or berries). The game has a fixed camera with amazingly detailed and animated foregrounds. Each world (out of seven) has its own unique feel. For example, Goldoa, the empire, has no trace of nature, just a golden city, while another island (in the ocean-less sky), whose name escapes me, looks like it was taken from a storybook with wacky, boldly outlined cartoon characters. The characters are fun and emotional and the main character, Kalas, goes through many changes so you never know what to expect from him. The storyline is so in-depth, that the game spans two discs. I guarantee, with that and more side quests than The Legend of Zelda, you can't put this one down until you beat it (or fail miserably).

I keep returning to Neverwinter Nights, but to user-created online content rather than the orginal game.

Civ IV is also a fave. As well as Sims 2.
