Chicken nuggets are made from chicken that is literally mashed up into a machine and then put in a template that is a particular size and shape, thus all chicken mcnuggets are shaped similarly.

You know when you buy fresh boneless chicken breasts or thighs in a market? Well, they take the de-chickened bones and a machine scrapes the little bits of chicken missed, off. They blend these scraplings with Texturized Vegetable Protein (and that's another story!), MSG, 'flavorings' (what tastes more like chicken than chicken?), chicken fats, sugar and corn syrup, extenders and excipients, FDA approved colorings, preservatives, chemicals that prevent ice crystals from freezing, chemicals that protect them from drying out during while frozen, and salt, lotsa salt. OK, all this is blended. Then they extrude the pieces, force thru a 'die' like for pasta into the nugget shapes. There are two shapes but they aren't for white and dark meat. After being extruded they're thickly coated with cheaper coatings and more salt and fat, frozen for months until it's fried in fat at your local MickyDs.

No, I'm not a vegetarian but when I read the list of ingredients I almost puked and stopped buying cute little McNuggets forever. Just one of those things.

Aren't you glad you asked?

I guess, when they started making them, the circle ones where all white meat, the weird shape ones where suppose to be dark meat. So, Last year, McDonalds started making their nuggets all white meat and and the Corporate Office just decided to keep the nuggets the same shapes.

Because without that all powerfull shape of the chicken nugget the entire world economy would shut down. That and it fits perfectly in the barbeque sauce container.

The were shapes in circles and boot shapes to distinguish between the white and dark meat. But now that they are all white meat its more of "just because". It's just what people are used to now.
