You kind of answered your own question. One reason is because they're bigger then smaller cars. They also weigh more then smaller cars and they usually have larger engines. All of these explain the diff in fuel economy between large and small cars.

It generally has to do with the fact that they weight more. More weight = more effort required to move it, thus hurting fuel economy. But it's too much of a blanket statement to say that all big cars consume more fuel than their smaller counter parts.
Also, larger cars typically have larger displacement engines, which use more fuel to operate. But again, this doesn't apply in 100% of the situations.

In addition to the larger size/weight they have to move, larger cars usually have more cylinders. More cylinders=more gas consumed.
