Here's the proof in case you are too ignorant to know this simple fact

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that_0.999..._equals_1

tough as hell, in non-standard real number systems, 0.999.... is not well-defined, so asking if 0.999... = 1 is meaningless; so logically the statement is vacuously true.

What kind of question is this? You are bringing mathematics into politics and differentiated a party at that.

Btw, 0.999... is not = 1 It is infinite and will never equal 1.0

I don't understand what this has to do with politics, but I'll prove for some of the answerers here that 0.99999...(never ending) DOES, in fact, equal one.

Here goes: Let's say that x=0.99999...Now, if you multiply both sides of this equation by 10, you shift the decimal one place to the right, but because the number of 9's is infinite, the part to the right of the decimal is the same. Therefore, 10x=9.99999...

Now, subtract the first equation from the second one - you can do this because you're subtracting equal amounts from both sides. This gives you 10x-x, which is 9x, on the left side, and 9.99999...-0.99999... on the right, which equals 9 because the infinite decimals cancel out. So 9x=9, and x=1.

I didn't read the link you posted, so this might all be in there, but that's how I learned it back in seventh grade.

Okay, wow. Read the article.
Just because something doesn't agree with your instinctive understanding of the world doesn't make it false, and based on the answers I'm reading, I highly doubt any of you has a formal education in advanced mathematical proofs. I agree, it's difficult to wrap your head around, but apparently there are a ton of mathematicians who concur with the results. At least understand their logic before contradicting them.

And how the hell is this divided along political lines?

Edit: Turns out this is absolutely true. I think it's more indicative of a weakness in our treatment of repeating numbers than a fact of nature, but modern standard mathematics proves that .99... repeating equals exactly 1.

There are other so called "non-standard" real numbers,[1] for which the equality does not hold. In many of these number systems, 0.999... is not well-defined.

An equals sign means that the thing on both sides are exactly the same.
.99999=1 would be a false statement.
1=1, and .999=.999 would be correct. So technically .999 does not equal one. Imagine the idiocy- TAKE A MATH CLASS!

That's it?!?!? The Democrats lost complete control of everything in the country, are completely powerless, can't get a single bill through congress and THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY?!?!?!

Seriously, go back to trolling Brittney Spears questions - you are not ready for the political arena.

well, I'm not math-head, but I have always thought of a number like .999999999999 which repeats forever as a number which "approaches 1."

But what does this have to do with Democrats?

Love, Jack.

What does math have to do with democrats... BTW your little wikipedia page just proved what I already knew, that .999 repeating, doesn't equal one, it is just so close that the difference is unnoticable, since the 9 goes on forever the difference is infinitely miniscule...

Are you aware that it is Republicans that have a Idiot in the White House. You voted for him, that makes you smart? Did you see his press conference, not even the worst Democrat I know is that stupid. Also thanks for the $9 trillion National Debt Republicans gave all working class Americans, thanks for the $ 2 trillion cost of the war in Iraq, thanks for the 19,000 wounded and 2650 dead, all done by Republicans in Congress. Stupid is as stupid does. Who said that?
