Columbus was forced to take refuge in an Indian village on
Haiti's north shore after his flagship, the Santa Maria, ran
aground on a nearby coral reef when the helmsman went to sleep on
Christmas Eve 1492. Using timbers stripped from the capsized
ship, Columbus' men built a fort they called La Navidad, or
Christmas, inside the Indian village.

Hi! "La Navidad" means literally Christmas in Spanish. As for Columbus times, "La Navidad" was the name of the first fortress built in America. It was named like that because it was built on Christmas of 1492 (with part of the Santa Maria, one of Columbus' ships that had wrecked on Christmas' Eve).

La Navidad is Spanish for "or Christmas or Christmas time."
I wasn't aware he had sailed during Christmas.
