Not every single transformer, just the ones in that stupid cartoon. They are a part of every standard electric system in the United States. When they blow, there can be localized blackouts.
When an entire substation blows, you can have borderline mass hysteria. As was the case at my house last night. 3 substations blew during a severe thunderstorm and knocked out power to 3 different towns in Oklahoma. Mustang, Newcastle, and Moore.
