Let me rephrase the question.

Do you trust the police and military to be the only non-criminals who are armed?

No matter who comes into power,
or what kind of laws are passed?

Even if it's "improbable" nowadays, WHAT IF the state uses its exclusive lethal force to promote injustice?
What do/can you do?

Yeah, that's great. Let's ban guns BECAUSE you CAN get/make other weapons easily...

Fulltime: I'm impressed! Yeah "guns" used to mean mounted smoothbores but now everyone understands it to mean all firearms. It's shorter to say!

i blanch at the idea of the police and military being considered non-criminals. the only persons i trust with guns, or weapons of any sort, are me and my friends (if they've had proper training... and not even some o' them).

When only outlaws have guns.... we're all in trouble!
I value my right (obligation) to carry & know how to safely use firearms. I knew how to safely handle a firearm when I was 5yo. My 1st memories are of my father getting the rifles out to 'help th ecowboys in a Western. I always figured that the cowboys were the invaders, so I shot at them!

I presume that you really mean fire arms. guns are the big things that either roll around on wheels, or are on Naval ships! Or.... as a Marine learns as standing holding & indicating respectivly to his firearm & his crotch....
"This is my weapon,
this is my gun.
This one's for fighting,
this one's for fun."

I trust the police, and parts of the military. Of course, taking away our right to bear arms would be a violation of our constitutional rights. And my brother would have to get rid of his gun collection.
On a side note, if the state tried the letahl force thing, well, there's other ways to defend yourself besides guns, and you can get most of the materials right at Wal-Mart.
