There are many reasons people get married, although not all of them are good. Family connections, money, stability, ect.
But, usually people get married because they have found a person that they can see themselves happily with for the rest of their lives. They found someone who they can be fully comfortable with. Someone they will share a friendship and bond with for the rest of their lives. They want to share every experience with, raise a family together, and someone to help them through their ups and downs. Marriage is a partnership. It's not all rainbows and butterflies. But, you are planning on spending the rest of your life with your best friend. Who wouldn't want to spend the rest of their lives with their counterpart? The person who completes them? Thats why people get married. It's more than just love.

People get married because they can't see living the rest of their lives without that special someone to share it with. Live together or marry, would you love LESS if just living together? One would think, it'd hurt just as much if after 20 yrs of living together, it was over vs. 20 yrs of marriage. To totally toss away marriage, shows a fear of commitment. To commit means a couple would have to work at it harder. Too many use divorce as an easy out, easy fix to whatever ails a relationship. I'm positive no one goes into a relationship, (marriage or living together) KNOWING it will fail.
