Well, in the first place its an excellent example of how the U.S. isn't a democracy. We're a republic. Democracy is 3 wolves and a sheep deciding whats for dinner. A republic is 3 wolves and a sheep with a machete deciding whats for dinner.

It made it so that the major populated areas would not be the ones served by the government, witht he smaller populated areas being ignored. This, in an odd sort of way, gives even states that are smaller or less populated a say in the government. Otherwise, imagine that New York City, LA, Chicago, and so on, could elect the president, with the other cities and states being ignored. It all evens out.

Well, it took the ACTUAL election out of the hands of the population. The Electoral College CAN vote for whomever they like. So, if the ignorant population elects a dictator in the popular election, then the Electoral College can rectify that situation in theory. It also prevents the King of England from being elected.

Honestly, the founding fathers were all upper class well educated politicians, being such they certainly distrusted the comparatively uneducated masses to choosing a proper leader. SO, in order to get the results they would find acceptable, they compromised on instating the Electoral College.

It didn't. The Electoral College was an attempt to address the uneveness of densely populated states and sparsely populated states, so that they would be more equally represented in elections. It also was an attempt to coalesce an election in a time when it could take weeks to achieve and report a complete election result.

they didn't want the major urban areas or all of the rural areas to have most of the say.
