They take a figure. Move it a very small amount. Take a picture.

They repeat this until the entire movie / short film is done. Then they compile it like a regular film, edit it, and then add sound and music if necessary.

It is a very painstaking process. Of course, nowadays, they just do everything by computer. They just make the figures look like they are made out of clay to decieve the untrained viewer.

Did you ever make a flip-book? Where you drew lots of pictures and flicked through the book very fast?

It works on a similar principle, animators make their claymation figures (out of many different mediums), take a shot with the camera then move it a little bit, take another shot... And do this all day... it takes a lot of time and a lot of patience, generally only making 2-3 mins of footage in a 8-9 hour day.

Bascially, the animators just make clay figures and take a picture. Then they move them, just a little bit, and then take another picture. After you repeat that process a lot, you show all the pictures quickly one after the other and it looks like they are moving.
