I have a 2004 chevy Impala that the "check engine oil" light came on. I changed the oil, filter and had other items serviced also. The light still comes on and stays on when car is running. I tried to reset the computer by disconnectiong the positive cable on teh battery for about 10 min. but light still comes on is there any way to reset the computer other than taking it to a repair shop?

How to Reset the CHANGE ENGINE OIL Message
The GM Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a CHANGE ENGINE OIL message being turned on, reset the system.

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset. To reset the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message use one of the following procedures:

Using the Radio
Turn the ignition to ACC or ON, with the radio off.
Press and hold the TUNE DISP knob on the radio for at least five seconds until SETTINGS is displayed.
Press the SEEK PSCAN up or down arrow to scroll through the main menu.
Scroll until OIL LIFE appears on the display.
Press the 1 PREV or 2 NEXT buttons to enter the submenu. RESET will be displayed.
Press the TUNE DISP knob to reset. A chime will be heard to verify the new setting and DONE will be displayed for one second.
Once the indicator has been reset, scroll until EXIT appears on the display.
Press the TUNE DISP knob to exit programming. A chime will be heard to verify the exit.
Turn the key to OFF.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

Using the Accelerator Pedal
Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly three times within five seconds. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message flashes, the system is reset. However, if it stays on, it did not reset. Repeat the procedure.
Turn the key to OFF.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

It will take at least a CODE READER or scan tool to reset the Check Engine Light.
That light has nothing to do with maintenance. It is the car's pnly way of telling you that the PCM has identified a problem in the powertrain control system.
You can go to one of several national chain auto parts stores and they will read the codes for you.
When they do, write down the identifier and go to the library, or buy the repair manual for repair and diagnostic strategies.
A TIP---> The code(s) retrieved only identifies the system circuit in which there was identified a problem. It does not NECESSARILY mean that that component is at issue.
For example, if you have a code P0174 "system too lean, bank 2", there could be a failure with the O2 sensor on bank 2. BUT it could also be a failing injector circuit or driver, or a restricted fuel filter or a fuel regulator out of range. There could be a failure in the fuel pump.
This is why it is important to follow the "trouble-tree" for the code. It can save a great deal of money installing parts that aren't going to repair the failure.
