I'm a current resident of South West Florida. This is my first year here and I haven't witnessed a hurricane. So I'm quite skeptical on how this one is going to be, what should I do/be aware of to be safe?

Hi, I've been in South Florida for three years and been through Jeanne and Francis in 2004 and Wilma in 2005. If you are on an island, you have to watch out for flooding as storm surge would be your biggest threat in addition to winds. Fortunately for you, the storm seems to be headed my way on the east coast of Florida. But, it is important to remember that these things can turn at the last minute. Be prepared.

Checklist: http://www.wcti12.com/hurricane_checklist.htm

Track the storm: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at5+shtml/144607.shtml?3day?large

A new track comes out four times per day at 5 am, 11 am, 5 pm and 11 pm.

Florida is only about 60 miles wide. This means that if hurricane or tropical storm force winds extend out that much and greater, you will feel some effects even if it hits the east coast.

I am in Florida too. I am not sure where you are but in the Tampa Bay area tbo.com is a good place to stay update. Also the National Weather Service has alot of info and maps at www.noaa.gov. I would take out some extra money in case there is no power or ATMs. Get gas for the car in case you and a million other people (literally) have to make a drive for it. I would also get a list of some hotels (phone #s and addresses) in case you have to leave. If you have pets find the ones that are pet friendly. As for food - get water and nonperisables and some paper/plastic plates/spoons/etc in case there is not water to clean anything. Get all of your medical supplys - bandaids, asprin, prescriptions...... Once you have everything together just stay update. The track could change for better or worse.

You'll be fine. It's not a big deal. Ernesto is a small hurricane. Just get a couple flashlights, a few extra rolls of toilet paper, some bottled drinks and ready-to-eat food. Also, get about $100 from the ATM in the next day or so in case you need it. You may need some tylenol also. I get headaches from storms.

Never under estimate hurricanes I've been through every one since 1984 and let me tell you if you do mother nature will sneek right and bite you on the butt, so with that in mind keep a good supply of batteries, (all sizes) radio, water, non perishable foods ,board up windows if you can , and refill any prescriptions. keep all impoprtant documents together in safe place
I don't know if this one will be that bad but you can never be to safe

p.s.
you can contact your local weather statyion for more hurricane preparedness

I dealt with Katrina in New Orleans. If Ernesto does hit Florida, it won't be near as bad as N.O. Look @ some sites on Hurricane Preparedness.

make sure you have a radio with batteries in it at all times, a small flashlight, and a change of clothes. Listen to the radio/tv and if the police tell you to leave, DON'T ARGUE, DON'T HESITATE. You're better off being too safe than being underwater.
