A good analogy is when Europeans settled America, the native Americans had no resistance to the new diseases (measles, smallpox, etc.) and many died. The aliens had no resistance to earth's diseases because they had never been exposed.

In the old movie, "War of the Worlds" germs killed the aliens. They had no defenses in their immune systems against our germs. I hope this helps.

No, seriously it was supposed to be a bacteria/virus that man had 'paid his dues' over thousands of years of building up a resistance and the aliens didn't have the antibodies like man did, so it infected them and they died.
