It's been dubbed "the American experiment." Before the war--colonial powers, European monarchies, oppression by the landed gentry and an appalling lack of religious freedom. After the war--a new birth of freedom (delayed for Blacks for an appalling additional 8 decades, and beyond); a huge fissure in the ruling oligarchies of Europe just a few years later in France, our great friend and benefactor in the revolution.
The ideas in the Declaration of Independence, and a few years later, the Constitution, were indeed revolutionary. The idea that a nation could be ruled at the will of its citizens through democracy, the structures of government, and federalism, while tracing their roots back to the Magna Carta in Britain, were unique in the world in their expression in the US.
