I used to work as a forensic's assistant. It's not as bad as people think. When we did the autopsies we called them "physical exams", but it's the last (and the most thorough)one you'll ever have. It's fascinating how you can figure the cause of death, the path a bullet traveled, and how long the person has been dead. It's especially interesting to get bones...there's so much you can tell from looking at a person's bones like what kind of life they had - active or sedentary, height, approximate age, stature, and sometimes race. I could go on and on.... I worked in this field for 5 years, and no 2 days were the same.

If a family member comes in or someone you know, you can request the day off or ask that someone else examine the body.

The smell stays with you forever...something you never forget...no matter how much bleach we used at the end of the day there was always that lingering smell.

I have been in the morgue and was there to see my Father's body. It was awful and that memory of him sticks out in my mind. It was truly straight out of a movie, I saw his body and collapsed onto my now husband.

As far as an autopsy, I would if it was someone that I didn't know.

Yes. I have done it already. Visited the mortuary room in the funerary building in my college. It was cold, and smelled bad but manipulating dead bodies and learning their different parts is a great experience. You are just playing stupid now, but its actually a great career.

Yes, I would, I think it would be interesting, from what I understand though, it is fairly boring.

I think it should be part of a program for convicted drunk drivers, to show them what they have done or could have done.
