I've been away from home for the last week. When I got home today, I looked in my freezer, and saw between 30 and 40 fruit flies laying dead at the bottom, as if they all just flew in there and froze to death. Any ideas on how they would have gotten into a closed freezer (and in such large numbers)?

A combination of weak spot in your seals and maybe you threw something in the freezer before you left that was still in the bag and had the fruit flies in it. Did somebody else have access to your apartment or home?

Check your freezer seals. There may be a weak spot in it that allowed them in and then frosted or froze over after a while trapping them in. Did your freezer door stick when you opened it?

Good luck and seals are inexpensive to fix. First you may want to clean your seals with light bleach and water to be sure that isn't the problem.

You must live in a warm climate. It happens sometime. You probably had some fruit flies in some fruit you bought, and well, you know the rest of the story!

Wow that's disgusting,my guess is dat one of the meat had maggots in them and they gre,and died or they probably just flew in a crack somewhere around the freezer! But that is so gross I can't even imagine it,wow sucha big number they probably was warm inside the meat while they were growing maggots and came out and froze to death!!!That's my guess!

You left the freezer cracked and they came in and were too ignorant to get back out, a pregnant one laid eggs in there when you had the door open, or ... I don't know!

check the seal around the door especially at the bottom.plus if your freezer has a fan in it sometimes they can get in from there somehow.

was everything frozen still?

the only thing i can think of is if the hydro went out, everything thawed and the fruit flies grew and wanted your now thawed strawberries.

That's my guess!
