Occult means knowledge of the hidden or supernatural, as opposed to knowledge of the measurable or visible
whereas
Cult means a cohesive group of people devoted to beliefs that are different than beliefs of the surrounding groups. (You would be considered a cult if you were a Lutheran in a Catholic community basically)

Rather then listen to what most people think would you care to know the truth? I am an Occultist and can explain the truth of the Occult as I know it. Occultists are people who seek the truth of all things, to look beyond the face of something to see what it is truly trying to say.
We simply are looking for the truth hidden within our daily being. The truth hidden in plain sight if you will. We study the truth in all things. Unlike scientists however we are not limited by what can only be explained. We also seek the truth within things not yet understood. This often includes religious ideas and principles. It is not limited to this alone however. We seek the truth in science, in astrology, in biology, in chemistry, everywhere the truth can hide we will seek it out.
A common misconception is that we are all Satanists and Magickians of dark magick. This is thanks to our friends in hollywood. I am thankful to see the media changing to except our ways a little more. I am not saying all of us are not Satanists or Magickians. Some of us are Satanists, some of us are Magickians. The people often forgot who follow our ways belong to many groups. Some are Christians, some are Catholics, Some are Buddhists, hindus, taoists. Some are Zeroastronists, some are Pagans, heck some are Pastafarians. We are everywhere always looking for a single thing. The truth! I hope you have come to learn a part of the truth with this answer.
Hails to the truth,
Silence

Occult literally means hidden things. Nowadays I think people would consider occult to include New Age, Wicca, neo-Paganism, Satanism, gnosticism, practices such as seances, fortune telling, psychics, etc.
A cult is something different. A cult is basically an unpopular religious group - especially one that uses coercion, brainwashing, and deception on its members. Some cults have occult beliefs - but most people involved in the occult are not members of an organized cult.

The occult is anything that is not in accordance with the church. Most people do not realize that " Witch " comes from Greece, and means " Wise woman ".. and Pagan comes from the old French word for country people. So Usually a older woman who was taught by her mother how to heal, would be considered the the medicine woman. Most where Mid waives. The newly art of Obgyn ( which was all men ) was being scrutinized by these woman, : Hence the witch trails. Most of these women where Midwives, and nothing more.

I would say that most people consider a cult to be any group of people organized for a religious purpose that is not recognized as "mainstream". Certain forms of Christianity (even Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses to some people), Wiccans and other neo-pagans, and radical forms of the recognized world religions would fit most people's definitions of a cult. If you meant occult, I think most people would consider anything tied to witchcraft, astrology, satanism, alchemy and the like to be occult.

The Occult refers to "hidden teachings", hidden for years due to perecution from others
A "cult" is usually a small fanatical group of religious followers. It's a tricky word because it's been thrown around in such a negative context.
