A question for fellow college students

Maybe you should step back and take a look at your perspective. Are you ALWAYS expecting professors to be power hungry and therefore walk into class with a negative attitude?

And to the other answerer who said that college professors have never had a real job, just how do you define a 'real' job? Guess what? Those doctors and lawyers and businessmen and women--they all had professors who taught them how to do their 'real' job!

Ah, been acting up in class, have you?

Seriously though, most professors in small universities and colleges don't. They don't get paid a lot and honestly could most likely get paid a lot more doing the same thing elsewhere, so they usually just love doing it.

Major universities however...most of them still love to teach, but others have been told way too often how good they are, or worse, how bad they are. This gives some of them the idea that things need to be done their way and no other way.

Just make sure to fill out that student review, and if need be, challenge the grade. If this happens often enough, someone will take notice.

I've only had a couple professors like this...some were teaching for the money, and while I passed the classes I learned more about bad attitudes and arrogance then the subject I was supposed to learn. The last one...I honestly thing she has forgotten what it is like to be a student and not already know everything in her beloved subject...

Former college student- College professors are like that because they have never actually had a real job in many cases, and they do not have a perspective of what life is like outside the Ivory Tower.

I have had many porofessors since I have several degrees, the highest, a BA and only one comes to mind as having some kind of problem but it was more about thinking he was smarter. In that class, I asked some decent questions and he slammed me in front of the class like I was stupid for asking. It was uncalled for and unprofessional and I'd say he had a power/intelligence trip. So, you really should change your question to why SOME do because from my experience most, almost all didn't.

often because they think they are imune to problems (ie; lose job or status)...

In my own case at least 4 of my professors were litterally incompetant and should not have been teaching.

I had a teacher in C++ who didnt even know the subject matter.
That despite the fact he had a PHD in Computer Science.

Why does the security guy sitting behind the little desk getting minimum wage power trip? Because that's the only little bit of power that they've been given. So they use it to it's fullest extent.

I think they feel they deserve it. I had a professor who would flip out if you called him "Mr." or "professor" instead of Doctor.
It turned the students off.
