I found a Dooney and Bourke Handbag at Goodwill ( Retails for $150-200+ but this one might be fake.). It was listed at $4.99 so OF COURSE I am going to buy it (real or not).

I take it to the cashier and she takes one look at it, then looks at the tag suspiciously. She then moves the purse off to the side and starts to go through it looking for any other sort of price mark on it. (Goodwill is now marking prices in PERMANANT marker, the purse should have had roman numerals somewhere ID'ing the price. This purse had no such marks - thank god. Like i want it de-faced so they can get more FREE $)

She calls over an assistant manager, and they both go over it several times, ignoring the tag that is RIGHT in their faces. She asks the A.M, if she should call the Manager over for a price check. WTF? They decide to sell it to me, but HOW RUDE! I was greatly offended, and I won't be returning. Get some damn respect GW employees, how can you be so rude when you're getting money for free?

We've had similar experiences with goodwill and the salvation army. Except on the other end. (IE Dropping off stuff.) When we moved we dropped off roughly $1500.00 in perfectly serviceable clothing, a good living room coffee table, and a bunch of other stuff, and they were complete assholes when we tried to drop it off. They didn't want any of it (I think they just didn't want to have to load it all up.).. When we asked to see the manager inside the store they changed their minds.

We've had this happen a few times, so we just stopped going.

I will tell you a little bit of why the employee did what she did.
I work for Goodwill. People are dishonest and switch tags all the time. Not saying it was you, it could be anyone before you. We are taught to price at about a third of retail if in like new condition and go down a little from there. A 4.99 dooney and bourke would be literally falling apart and at that price would not make it to the sales floor in our store. 20-50 is about what we would price them in our store depending on if we can tell if they are real or not.
It might seem to you that we are just doing it to make you pay more money. That's not what goodwill is about. It's about making money from items that are donated, to help create jobs, help recycle, and we also have many programs that help virtually everyone in the community- disabled, veterans, domestic abuse victims, special olympics, boy/Girl Scouts, rehabilitation, and housing for the homeless amount many others. I actually love my job at goodwill!

Sounds like she was doing her job and although you got what you wanted for the price you wanted you were put out by a little delay. Those people do not make a lot of money and more than 84 percent of Goodwill’s total revenues are used to fund education and career services, and other critical community programs.

I think you would have gotten a good deal for ten bucks.
Go donate another fiver and STFU.

I'm not sure why they did that to you. I've never encountered rude Goodwill employees, or if I have, it wasn't bad enough to stick in my mind. HAVE encountered rude Goodwill customers. You know, like the ones who go there with their mother in laws to buy up and sell on ebay for a profit the stuff poor people or college students could use on job interviews?

I'm sure that the purse its original because remember that everything in the store are things that people donate,so maybe that's why they were checking because it's very cheap

you know, it's a not for profit organization and people steel, ransack the place... change the tags around... all of the time, and it is sad.

but don't get so worked up about it. they are just minimum wage employees trying to do what is right.

Because some people don't know what respect is, some don't even know how to respect themselves. So take my advice and shake it off
because your better than that disrespectful person!

even funnier that they don't get the money. they just work there. they get paid their hourly wage. its not like they will personally profit from the sale. in trying to filter more money off of you they are doing it just get you to pay more money. in no way will they benefit from a higher item price. it makes no sense at all. i wouldn't even work that hard at looking for a secondary tag.

reminds me of convenience store clerks who argue with robbers. why fight it? if you're working at 7-11 just give up the cash. who cares of the parent company loses a few bucks? no point in risking yourself in the process.

I believe some people no matter how much is given to them they still feel like we owe them more.
So sad for them.
