Most people think it is very uncool to be jealous or to feel envy. But could it ever be a good thing.

I think that maybe a beginning actor, for example, might be jealous of a great actor but that could motivate him (or her for that matter) to study and train hard to become a great actor. That would be good, wouldn't it?

Maybe if you feel jealous of a friend or someone in your family, that might make you work hard to develop your talents or to get a great job.

Really great answers. I also am against envy since it can get murderous. But again as one of y'all said, it does depend on definitions.

It is not so easy to separate emotions since we tend to fool ourselves at times. For example, I feel that I have been a champion in the past but I have mixed emotions about current stars since I used to run faster than they run now.

But I honestly don't know if I am jealous because they make money and I never made a cent back in the dark ages of amateur athletics.

I'd love to read the answers to this questions by others mainly cause I don't get it. I don't get jealous and that has pissed of bf in the past but I seriously don't get it. I think I've always being taught that it's a bad thing, and that though I should strive to be a better person I should balance it with being content with what I have. My mother always say "Jealousy is the root of hatred" and I think she's probably right.

I rationalize things a lot and I'm very pragmatic, so I don't find a need to be jealous. For example: if you love someone and they love someone else I don't see why you should be jealous of the person they love, because if you truly loved them then you will put their happiness first and if they are happy with that other person then that should make you happy as you love them after all. If you're not happy then you don't love the person so why bother yourself.

In your example I would say that the less experienced actor wouldn't feel jealous but admire the more experience actor and strive to be just as good or even better. Because if he or she was jealous he or she would probably begin to despise the more experienced actor and may be totally discouraged.

Being jealous or envious is never good because of the negative feelings towards the person. Admiring someone and being inspired to be more like them is totally different. It really depends on what jealousy and envy mean to you.

I agree, jealousy can be a great motivator. But it's better to try to make yourself better for you , not out of spite of someone else, cause that's no way to live always looking at the other guy and wanting what he has. Work your tail off and get your own.

I read your question, thought of the answer and then clicked your question. You wrote exactly what my answer was going to be. Jealousy and envy motivate me. I get motivated to perform better when I am jealous of another.

yes, that makes sense. It's the possesive jealousy and hazing-fasioned envy that I doubt work for good which arises when I hear those words. I believe if you can control that, then yes-it can definitely work for good.
