I've never heard a dog say 'bow wow' before... I really don't get where people got that one from...

They make such simple noises because their voice-boxes and mouths aren't capable of producing the same quality and variety of sounds as ours are and also, their intelligence plays a part.

They have to make some noise to express emotions and feelings... it just so happens to be 'meow' and 'woof'.

In Japan, dogs say,"Wan, wan." Dogs and cats probably sound differently so a dog won't mistake a cat for another dog and vice versa. Horses and cows probably sound differently for the same reason.I think it would sound strange if a dog said, "meow."

My cat says 'feed me'.

Dogs go bow wow or arf or yip or howl.
