The way to solve this is using order of operations. PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) Parenthases, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.
SO first take care of the parenthases:
14 + (-3)1 + 1 - 21 becomes 14 - 3 + 1 - 21
now that we just have addition/subtraction you work from left to right.
14 - 3 + 1 - 21 becomes 11 + 1 - 21 which becomes 12 - 21 which becomes -11.
