I have always thought, perhaps somewhat self-righteously, that gossip is terrible. What do you think?

I read somewhere that the good thing about gossip is that it keeps people in line. Since I know that the family and all the neighbors will talk, I can't do anything too weird or harmful. What do you think of that idea?

FIrst, by weird things I don't mean anything perverted but I tend to surf and swim in violent waves which scares some people so I have to be careful not to get to radical out there.

Second, there is nothing worse than slander (well, there are worse things but it is a terrible act. I would say shoot me rather than ruin my rep.)

The thing with gossip is that it usually isn't the real picture. And the more it gets passed around the more diluted from the truth it becomes.

Gossip can be very harmful! It seldom has any truth. There is nothing good about gossip.

Live your life well and always be accountable for your actions.

If someone spreads lies about you confront the person and ask them for a public apology ( through your local newspaper) . Telling lies about someone to harm their reputation is a crime, it is called "slander" .
Don't do this to others and don't accept it from others.
If someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, politely tell them' I don't wish to discuss this" or if a question is about someone else, simply say "you need to ask him.her"

I suppose that's true. Gossip does have its positive side. But for the most part, it's harmful. Nothing good ever came out of talking about other people.
But I'm not perfect, and even I do it sometime.

At school, gossip can be hurtful and can ruin self esteem. But as an adult it can be fun. At least people would be communicating. Usually its not too fun when you are the center of gossip though.
