The reason why your dad probably doesn't like it is because of the marketing issues.
The heavy metal part of the music industry is trying to make metal appeal to teenagers who rebel against their parents. They know what they're doing. Now, they know that most parents will not like their children listening to it. That just makes the children listen to it even more. Again, rebellious teenagers.
I myself am not a rebellious teenager, but a teenager with mature music taste, as are you. Society views heavy metal as "unclassy", and view this usually undiscovered talent as "just a whole buncha noise."
Another reason why society doesn't like heavy metal is because they are brainwashed into the minds of the mainstream music. Most of this mainstream music on MTV takes little or no talent at all. It's all about the sex. Look at the rap. I won't get into details, but it is basically using women as objects - sex toys. This isn't good because it triggers teenaged boys' "mature" part of their minds. I am glad you're not sucked into this crap. Bravo!
Modern society today is also brainwashed into religion. If some of the heavy metal bands these days have music that "goes against religion" (for example - Marilyn Manson - "I'm not a slave to a God that doesn't exist..") they believe the band, as well as the listeners, are "anti-Christs." I mean, come on, it's just music, not a satanic bible we're reading.
But, like people say...
To each their own.
