That is more for your benefit. If you are showing a horse and the coat needs to be then the Light will keep a thin coat. Mother natures way of giving them a full coat in the winter. Shorter days of light will give them a full coat for the winter. Show horses and to have thin coats and timers on lights are to give the horse a false sense of spring and thin coat.

For the safety of the people who work in the barn/stable. Horses are a prey species and see just fine in the dark, they really don't much care one way or the other, but it's a lot easier to tend a sick horse when you can see him.

When we show in the winter we keep it well lit because it stops the winter coat from coming in at full force. When the days get shorter it signals the horses body to start growing the heavy hair. (So they say)
All our horses are blanketed in the winter.

For saftey. You never know when you need to be out there when its dark. (Ride late? Dark came early? Hurt horse? Sick horse? Left somting important out there? Leveing early for show, clinic or trail ride?)
You don't want to be stumbling around in the dark, hurting yourself and scaring horses. You also want to be able to find what you need, and you need to be able to see your horses easily in case you need to treat an injury, sick horse, and to be able to see well enough just so you catch things that may be wrong that you would not see in the dark.
Stables do not have to well lit ALL the time (unless you don't want your horses to get a winter coat.) But you need to be able to flick a switch and see.

Stables should be well-lit for safety precautions, to prevent being trampled.

its nice to be able to see in the night time. stables don't have to be well lit at night time when the horses are slepping. it's better not to have them on at night.

Because horses have poor eyesight, they'll be much calmer in an area where they can see around them. And it's much easier to handle, them tack up, ect. when you can see what you're doing.
