I actually like the ending. I got to decide for myself whether Jonas and Gabe survived or not.
I'm actually kind of disappointed that Lowry came out with a couple of sequels that (sort of) tell you what happened. I didn't want the definitive answer. I like not knowing. I have yet to read either of those books.

Technically a book ends on the last page. If you did not like the ending that is one thing, but you have not provided a reason why you disliked it. The problem might be that you have not read enough literature to recognize why the author chose to close the book in the way she did. I would suggest that you discuss the ending with a few friends. Ask specific questions such as what you think actually happened to the characters? Use your creativity and speculate on what you think might happen on the day after the book closes. A question I had when reading the book was whether or not the ending was spiritual or physical.
I read the book in a couple of hours and found it remarkably challenging and thought provoking for young adult fiction.

Stories that don't wrap things up for me are always a little frustrating, but I have come to discover that I like them more more that books that do. This way I can never be disapointed with the decision the author made.

I was, but remember, there is a second book! Gathering Blue is what I think it is called. Look it up!! Trust me, it wraps things up. At first it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with The Giver, but it does. There is also a third book but I don't remember what it is called... sorry!

I mean that is easily the worst book I have read in my life. It was a major waste of my time, and my life. I barely read it. My friends told me the hold thing and that's how I passed Literature that year. The author is a pissed off old lady who has no talent.

I liked it. It's called open-ended or a cliff-hanger. You have to decide for yourself what you think happened. It's more intellectual that way. Personally, I think they both froze to death. But that's just me.
