I have a Murray lawn mower, gas powered, 3.5hp, and it will not start. So far, I have checked the air filter, and I don't know if its too dirty, but i brushed it off a bit so there is nothing on it. It is a bit wet, but i was told that it should have some type of oil on it. I changed the spark plug, and it started up beautifully once after that, but now it won't start at all. I can pull the cord and it has gas. What should I do? could it be flooded? I don't know.... please help!!!

You just have to yank it a few more times.
If you said you changed the plug and it ran ok the first time, then the plug may have some oil on it that is clogging it.
Try removing the plug and clean it again. Check the gap to make sure it didnt collapse. Put the plug back in and make sure the wire is tight. If the ring is loose, use some pliers and squeeze it a tiny bit to make it tight again.

Pull the plug and with the wire attached, check for spark. Is it wet and smells like gas? Then reinstall the plug and, after making sure the choke is off, start pulling again.
If the plug was dry, choke it and start pulling.
Our old saying with engines when you don't know for sure if it's flooded is " When in doubt, flood it" Then you know where you're at.

If you had your mower stored and you did not drain out all the gas from the carburetor, as long as the mower was out of use for months, the gasoline probably eroded the seal in the carburetor. Also check the mower. Maybe you need to flick the lever in the right position--Open--for the gas to flow to the carburetor.

3.5..... (briggs? tecumseh?) if the air filter is oiled (foam?) then it must be a briggs.....
This has a diapragm style carb..... I'd suggest taking the tank/carb assembly off as a whole..... get a new diapragm and gasket kit (3 bucks max) and take the carb off (few phillips head screws) and rinse the tank out with gas, and get a can of carb cleaner and blow every and all holes out with carb cleaner (and make sure the ends of the dip tubes are clear, do not however remove that mesh there)
If you do not know how, it should not cost much to have a shop do it (as this particular engine is very simple to work on)

Foam air filters may be cleaned with diswashing detergent thourougly dried and 3-4 tablespoons of motor oil squezed throughout any excess wiped away with paper towels.
Check the fuel tank and make sure there is no water in it.
Put the filter screw back in the hole if you try starting it with the filter off.

Make sure that the spark plug is firmly connected. If it started once after you changed it, it could have just come loose. Happens all the time on my mower.

check your plug again after trying to start it. If its wet, its flooded. dry the plug and pull the motor rope without the plug in, it helps dry things out inside. If on the other hand, the plug is dry, you may need a new ignition coil or magneto

Sounds like its flooded. Keep pulling, she'll start up eventually. Try starting without the air filter on. It worked on mine once.

that happened to my dads yesterday! we tried everything and my dad even took it apart and it still wouldnt turn on! so he went to home depot and they told him that it was flooded, so he went and got a new one thsat you start by turning a key and it goes so fast that you have to sprint to catch up and the best part, i was mowinng and kicked the bag to see if i needed to empty it, and there was nothing after i was half way done, so i read the directions and it cuts the grass so much that it turns to powder and it is a top soil for the grass, but this one was 400 dollars, and it is TORO but i hope you can get it working!

It could be anything. It's better to trouble shoot with the basics first. I'm providing a source which should be helpful.
