I wrote a check a while ago that was never cashed. How long do I need to keep tracking it in my checkbook before I can assume it's just not going to be cashed? After that point, will banks actually reject it if someone tries to cash it?

After six months a check is considered "stale" and can't be cashed. HOWEVER, keep in mind, the payee may find it seven months later, take it to their bank and if the teller doesn't catch the date on it, it can go right through the Federal Reserve Bank.

If the check is a large amount, consider putting a stop payment on it. If you don't want to do that, then keep the extra funds in your checking account in the eventuality that the check does get presented for payment.

It is called "stale" after a period of time, usually it is six months, however check with your bank, some do not have this policy. Also give the payee (the person you wrote the check to) a call and mention that it has been a good while and you'd like to know when to expect it to be cashed. If they have lost it, you can put a stop payment on that one and reissue another. Hope this helps :)

My ex-boyfriends roommate tried to cash his check 3 months after he wrote it and it went through. So i would try to contact the bank, but i think they would usually charge to search for a lost or stolen check.

It probably depends which country you're in. In England I believe it's 6 months.

Unless you specify a time period on the check as to how long it is valid, the time limit is approximately 3,000 years. Nope, they will probably honor it regardless. Hello !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
