Ok my girl has a 2000 chevy cavailer that makes a grinding noise when it turns, when you try to start it. I checked the wires and they seem to not be loose? any one know enough about chevys to dtermine how to tell if it is the starter going out or if it could be the cylinoide? Thank you

You didn't specify whether or not the grinding noise is still present when the car is running. All the solonoid does is engage the starter motor into the bendix whcih engages the flywheel, if it's grinding, my assumption that it is the starter itself.

Bad solenoids click or make no sound. Grinding is a sure sign of a bad starter.
