who wrote it
what did they write
where did they write it
when did they write it
why did they write it

when looking at a novel ask yourself

who is the character (Do this process for each of the main characters)
what did they do
where did they do it
when did they do it
why did they do it..

to truly read a piece critically you need to read and understand the piece outside of the context of the authors life as well as within the context of the authors life...

Critical reading is very analytically reading. Also it is about deconstructing. You have to read with a critical eye and analyze it deeply.
