It's something people can have in common. Now they have something to talk about: how much they love Johnny Depp (for a not at all random example). For those of us who have a certain amount of problem with coming up with something to talk about, it can be OK for openers.
But that's not really worship. That's being a fan. Some people do get awfully carried away, though. I think they see a role model when they need one, and dream of being rich and famous. Problem is, famous is not so much fun: your privacy is constantly disrupted and you have to make a big deal about everything. You live out a soap opera, to a pitiful degree.
But if you really do love some superior performer (Mr. Depp, for my example), the best thing you can do is be a quiet admirer. Don't try to see him live, or engage his attention on you personally. Because it will not be a good experience: you will be an annoyance. And if you love him, you don't want to be that to him. You want to be a loyal fan, not a nuisance.

I don't worship them exactly. I'm grateful for them. Forgive me but I love television!! I think it's absolutely wonderful that there are people who put themselves out there to entertain people and make them laugh or think or whatever. Many of them deal with alot of rejection before becomong successful so it's not all for the money. Most of them I believe have artistic integrity and I think it's wonderful.
That being said I've been able to meet a few marginal celebrities through my work as a restaurant manager. The ones I've met have been pretty nice people but I've never met a huge star. I don't work anywhere that I run across them everyday so when I do it's a hometown experience. And it's very relaxed.
One of our regulars is an actor. And while he's not famous, he has had roles in movies with big name actors and when he comes in he says "Oh I just finished working with so and so." And I say "Really? What's he like?" And he says "He's a great guy. Wonderful to work with etc" And then I get disgusted and say "Listen Hollywood, we're not in L.A. Tell the truth, he's a punk *** isn't he?" He never dishes the dirt but I think it's just what you get used to saying if you want to keep working and you're unknown. I mean they all can't be nice and wonderful to work with.

Hmm very good question, I mean I like celebs, I'll read about them and all but if I met when on the street I'd treat them the same way I treat everyone else, and if I liked the celeb I might say hi and ask for a pic, but that's about it. People with celeb pin-ups who cry when they meet them, or obsessively try anything to meet them, or pull crazy stunts to get noticed scare me sh*tless!!! Some people are just weird!!!
I guess Because they are bored with their own lives, and look at celebs wishing to trade places with them, just for a day!!
I'm with you "spittin thaReal" it's not just celebs who r grossly over paid, it's athletes too!!! It's like Marily Monroe said, "Hollywood is] a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul. -Marilyn Monroe" Did u know that she had the IQ of a genius but played stupid to be famous, so she new what she was talking about!!!

I totally agree with you, and have wondered the same thing.
Maybe they are not quite happy with their own lives and live
vicariously through their Idols? I have some very talented
friends who sing better than a lot of professionals! Also I
know women who are much more beautiful than many of
the Stars!!

I'm with you. It really sickens me.
I can't believe how some people will break down and cry, just because they are in the presence of some so-called superstar. I don't get it. They don't even know these people.
I think most of them are without talent and grossly overpaid.

It's a rush knowing that someone made it big in show business, music, or whatever. 'Cause maybe sometime all of us had a dream of being famous at something, and getting to meet someone who did get to realize their dream is a thrill.

because they have nothing else to do with their not so exciting lives and have nothing interesting to do like fulfilling the purposes of which they were brought to this world by our Father God Almighty and worshipping Him. so the least of the worldly things amuses them.

I agree--and that is why they very seldom impress me.
(Unless they use all their money for a worthwhile cause, like Oprah recently did--opening a school for underprivileged girls in South Africa.)
