I was curious since my husband is a righty and I'm a lefty. My child's doctor mentioned to me it's somewhere around 4-5 years old. They will usually have a preference before that but they'll stop experimenting with their other hand by around that age.

They will show a favorite about three to 4 however when they enter preschoo it will be brought out .by the class work there. Our three year old is still using both and can pretty much use both hands, now that he has moved to a pre school and uses scissors and glue and crayons he tries them both out and goes to left when not thinking about it.
The child needs to know his or her comfort zone the age is not the factor it is the decision of the child What ever you do let them make the decision not a teacher or you .
My daughter was forced to changed in 2nd grade she had a bad time excepting the right hand. She can write only on the right but all else is left hand.
I know this is not what you ask for but is how we have handled the left or right Hope this helps.

Usually children start to show a preference for left or right hand from about 2 years onwards. Some children will continue to be ambidextrous (like me) and others will be very definite in their preference from an early age. An interesting fact about left handedness: you are more likely to be left handed if you were exposed to more ultrasound scans whilst your mum carried you (this is research from about 2-3 years ago - don't know how it accounts for the millions of us in previous generations who were born before scanning was routine).

Usually very early on after 10 weeks, my children both were left handed at the beginning and continue to be so now (4 and 2)

My son only used his right hand until he was 20 months old. He had to have surgery to remove a huge wart from his hand and it was wrapped up for a week. During that time he had to start using his left hand now he's almost 3 and uses both his hands for different things.

We are starting to see that our daughter is right handed, and she just turned a year old. Every kid is different, but they should show a preference for which hand is dominate between 10 - 16 months.

I was about 3 or 4 when they figured out what hand I was. According to my mother, it took me a very long time to figure out what hand I wanted to hold pencils/crayons/markers with. For awhile I used my left hand, then switched to my right, switched back to left, and then back to the right. I turned out right handed but I'm ok at writing with my left, too.

i always found it easy to tell with my 3 as they always seemed to favour one hand over the other. i have 2 that are right handed and one that is left. i could tell which they were going to be by about 4 months. strangely when they were scanned when i was pregnant with them the two that were right handed both lay with their heads to the right and the left handed one the other way round!

it varies -- some children don't show a "preference" when playing with toys, etc. until they are older -- some show a preference young. Even when they start drawing they might go back and forth by using each hand. Some kids may write with their right hand, but kick a ball with their left foot.... it all depends
