Like everyone said, you gain weight because of water retention, blood volume, and the person growing inside of you.
Yes, you have cravings but that doesn't mean you eat more. I have cravings and I satisfy them but I don't over do it. There is no reason to eat like a pig.
As for extra calories, yes, you should be taking in a few hundred more calories than normal but this is like a cup of yogurt. That is it. You are NOT eating for two as so many people like to think. That implies you should eat more and really, you shouldn't. Just eat healthier.

I'm sorry but I don't get all this obsession with weight while pregnant.
Surely having a baby is the most precious thing on earth, way more precious than fitting into size 6 jeans?? who cares if you put weight on?!?
I'm 26 weeks and have put on over a stone (12 pounds) and COULDN'T CARE LESS!!! I'm not "fat" - never have been - and any excess will be lost when I have the baby.
You do not gain weight just through food - you gain weight because of the baby, your enlarged uterus, the placenta, amniotic fluid etc.
You don't need a certain amount more Calories when you are pregnant- you need to eat enough of the right things to give your baby all it needs and allow your body to cope with the extra stress of being pregnant. And there is no safe way to eat while pregnant and "count" calories - if you are that obsessive about it, you need to see a doctor or obs/gyn and disuss this properly before you put your and your baby's health at risk.
The best thing to do is just listen to your body, it will tell you what you need. Take a multivitamin supplement too.

You gain weight in pregnancy because you are growing another person in there. You need to eat around 300/400 more calories per day towards the end of the pregnancy.

Some women gain weight overall as you get larger so don't do the energetic things you usually do, also most of the weight is fluids which clear in the following weeks, oh and of coarse there's a baby.
Keep active, even if it's only having a walk about, and after the main event ease yourself back into the old routines.

You only need about 100 more caleries. That's like one yogurt per day. Your metabolism increases during pregnancy, and you do feel hungrier more often. Eat smaller, more frequent meals and try not to gain more than 20-30 lbs. Any more can be unhealthy and will be hard to lose later. Your doctor will monitor your weight during your pregnancy. But food does taste so much better when you're pregnant! Enjoy!

Obviously, you gain weight because your baby is growing. Seeing all the different answers about how much more you should eat to keep you and your child healthy just tells you that you should talk to your doctor about it. If you are not pregnant at this time and are just curious, still ask a doctor. If you or a friend is going to see a doctor soon, one of you can ask that question. (No extra expense, that way!)

Officially About an extra 200 - 400 calories in the last trimester (after 26 weeks)
And you do eat more as your body needs more energy my first pregnancy 3 stone, second 2 and my current about 2 stone and my first 2 were 7lbs 15 exact and this one is due to be about the same.
I lost it all after and looking after yourself is priority not dieting

You only need 200 calories more during pregnancy. You gain all of the weight because its the weight of your baby and all of the fluid in the baby pouch.

You eat more because you get cravings due to the hormonal imbalance in your body. But like someone already said you only need about 300 additional calories. You're not really eating for two people, as was often said in the 1950s.

You only need to add about 300 calories a day to your diet.
Also, much of the weight (unless you eat like a pig) is only extra fluid, blood volume, amniotic fluid, etc. It will soon disappear after birth.
