I do it line by line. First memorize the first line. Then add the second line to it and repeat those a few times. Then add the third line, and so on, and before you know it you have the whole poem.

When I was in school we have to memorize a verse of poetry every night and that is how I did it. I can still recite many of them -about 40 years later!

Here are a few good sites about memorizing poems.

To memorise a poem you need to know and understand the words and phrases in the poem....

if you know what all the words and phrases mean then memorise the poem by reading it through thoroughly from beginning to end three or four times aloud....

reading loud helps you hear and remember the rhythm and rhymes in the poem and makes it easier to remember the poem...

then write the poem out by hand several times...

then read the poem one stanza at a time by reading it then reciting it while its covered then check you remembered it ..... move on to the next stanza

keep doing this over until it is remembered...

I used to do it stanza by stanza, or group the lines in sets if there's only one stanza. Do one per night and repeat the one from last night on the next night so you don't forget it. Leave enough time between the assignment and the due date so you can divide the poem up evenly and practice every night; also so you have about 2 nights to practice the whole thing.

Also, write it out a bunch of times; you'll remember it more. I had to do this in 7th grade with cell parts and it works! You can put each night's set on index cards and make flash cards. Finally, you can recite to your parents, stuffed animals, or even your dog. :)

Read a line, then close your eyes and repeat the line. Go through the poem line by line like that.
Then try 2 lines at a time.
Keep increasing the number of lines you recite at a time each time you go through the poem.

1.) Read every line individually over and over again. Memorize them one by one. Then, as you go down the list, say the lines over and over again, as well as the ones before it that you already memorized.

2.) Put the words to a song.

3.) Keep reading it over and over again.

*I prefer option 1.

1) read it a couple times over and over
2) write down the first letter of each word into the lines.

it should be easier becuase you are already familiar with the poem. then you can try reciting it with the letters- but in case you forget- there is a letter to help you. its way easy. we use it in seminary!

Well, for starters, read it aloud.

Some employ the use of rap or others employ melodies. For me, after reading aloud, I read it the second time and then third until I can recall what I have read. Then I memorize it by stanza and so on.

I read it 2-3 times, then write it down, then reread it and find a way to get a "beat" into the oral recitation of it.
