I'm thinking about getting a labtop, and it will be wireless ready/have wireless capability (I have no idea if they are the same thing or not).
I have NO IDEA how wireless even works. I don't know if the labtop already comes with what I'll need to connect, or if I still have to get a router or card or whatever. Do I have to have an ISP?
My mother has MSN Dial Up, and I absolutaly refuse to deal with dial up C.R.A.P.
I would very much appreciate it if someone could fill me in on exactly how wireless works. I've tried looking it up online and keep getting more confused, because the answers I get are form places the provied wireless..so I'm still ?????????????????????
It would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance!

All you need is a wireless router connected to the Cable or DSL modem with an internet connection since the modern laptops already come with wireless cards. Once the router is setup properly you can access web on the laptop. But enable security password to make sure no one else can access your network and use your internet service. For your desktops I would recommend using wires connecting the PC and wireless network (wired networking is cheaper than wireless) but if you are annoyed by wires and have enough money to buy wireless adapters for your PCs then go ahead.

Any lap top can be wirless. It is just a card that you plug in to the side of the laptop. Normally when they say wireless they mean only networking. So if you don't have other computers at home and have a network there is no advanage of having it.

I believe you are wanting to connect to the internet wirless. This is do-able by buying an air card for your laptop to plug into the port where your normal networking card connects. But your best bet is to get it from the wirless phone co to make sure the card works with their system. It is like a cell phone for your computer. If you use Cingular you will pay about 75 bucks a month plus a large price for the card. I found the best is T-Model because you get unlimited internet and air time for about 50 bucks a month. Plus the card is priced a little better.

If you get cable email me or contact me on messanger. I will be happy to tell you what to get to network both computers wireless or by wire. Would cost for a router bout 50 bucks at walmart and maybe an addapter for your moms computer for about 30 bucks.

you have a few options to get wireless on you laptop. First off when it says your laptop hasa integrated wireless networking that means it has the ability to pick up a wireless signal from a wireless router that is conected to the net.
In order for you to have wireless internet capabilities you have really a few options.
1. You can get broadband cable or DSL and a wireless router and then you can use your laptop wirelessly at home.
2. You can take your laptop with you to a wireless "hotspot". These are typically found at coffee shops, fast food places, libraries, schools, etc. and are just a larger version of what you would do to get wireless at home, only the business you sitting down at is providing the DSl and wireless router. The obvious downside is that you would have to be at these locations to pick up the wireless signal.
3. The last option is to go to a cellular phone provider and talk to them about a wireless LAN card. what that basicall is is a wireless card that runs off thier cell phone network and gives you the ability to surf the net anywhere you would normally get cell phone reception. These tend to cost about the same as an internet connection in you home but give you way more mobility. This in my opinion is the best option, though you wil have to pay for the hardware(a pc card) to get it.

You will need to sign up with a hi speed provider, like Road Runner or Yahoo or Comcast Cable. It all depends on where you live, what is available. In fact, you should probably make sure that where you live there is hi speed available. Pick up a router at an office supply or computer shop. You will program that and if your new laptop has a wireless card, you are good to go!

wireless ready is a centrino mobile technology you just click on available wireless network connection then click on the one you like most and you are in. oh sorry!! first thing first if you are going to use it at home you need to get a DSL not "dial up", then some DSL modems are routers,( yahoo) if not buy a router and install the software do your password and crap and you are online.
now if you dont want to pay internet just go to any library or any friendly wireless connection stores (mc donalds, coffe shop) at least in la area i can go anywere
the only bad thing is this places close early.. or tell your neighbor not to use a secure connection.

I'm not really sure exactly how wireless internet works except that a signal is sent from the router to the wireless card that will be on your laptop. Once it picks up the signal (which sometimes can be from far away) you're sharing that person's internet connection. One time my boyfriend and I went to stay at the beach in a beach house. He took his XBOX 360 and I brought my laptop. He has a wireless adapter on his XBOX and when he turned it on, it picked up a signal from somewhere so he was able to play online and I was able to get online on my laptop. It's very nice. You'll enjoy it.

You only need a wireless router. The computer will come with a wireless card if you say it's wireless ready.
