It is a bit extreme. Unfortunately, the system will not change until enough people rebel against it.

Some artists really do over price themselves. Madonna is the most over priced of the lot. Other artists are so keen to make money from the sale of tickets they will agree to the marking up of an unscrupulous promoter or bookings manager.
Sometimes the additional levy is rendered so by the promoters who may offer a postal service for your tickets.
The only acceptable reason for surcharging or the placing of a fee is if you pay by credit card. The banks charge businesses extra costs for the service of credit control etc and this is the only way to reach a compromise on costs.
The way to solve this would be for the industry to agree to self monitor and fix charges of tickets, merchandising of concert products, CD sales, and final end payments to artists, managers, manufacturers and other legal entities connected to the music industry. This would mean breaking some world known cartels.

And that is why I hate ticketmaster. They are evil greedy $hitmongers. If it's available, I go to the venue and purchase the tickets there, if they try to charge a fee, I tell them to go fawk themselves and leave. I agree, the cost of tickets is ridiculous. Support your local music scene and go to local shows. At least there you get a good price on tickets and the artists are still accessible. You can go up to them and talk to them before or after their set and have a drink with them.

If the promoters paid the ticket agents, there would still be an increase! Ticket agents deserve a wage!! Insurance Brokers do the same thing!!

Yes it is a rip off - you seemed to get charged booking fees for everything nowadays (cinema, theatre) and its annoying and cheeky. You go online or ring to save time & effort and you get charged extra for it.

I totally agree with you on this. It's absolutely ridiculous that they charge us simply for buying a ticket!
