I'm in the south and my bed isn't high. I have seen beds that are high. Actually they were in magazines like Home and Garden and Designer Homes so its not just a southern thing...just a style of bed. The pictures of the beds in the White House are all high. Maybe it is an 'antique' thing. m

Originally, this was designed to keep critters such as mice, etc., out of the bed. the other use was for the "hot bed pan in cold times. A pan with hot coals was put under the bed to provide some warmth. the also use to wrap hot bricks in cloths and put them under the covers at the foot of the bed.
