I have my husband name and portrait on my leg, but.... We were married for 42 yrs before I did it. And he has passed away, so its a memorial to him. If you would like a name put your children's names they will always be your kids. Only after years of marriage would I get husbands name inked.

I personally think that it is up to you. It is going to be on YOUR body and if you do not mind possibly breaking up with the person who you tattooed their name and have it there forever then there is nothing wrong with that. BUT it would really piss your next partner off having to look at it all of the time. I think if you are married to that person or if you have a child by that person then it is better then just getting your mans name per se. Or if you have children or a loved one who passed then it is not a negative thing. I got my daughters fathers name on me before I got pregnant and I thought it was dumb after I did it even though we are still together!
It is a personal choice but should be a long drawn out consideration.
THE BEST BET, if you feel the need to tattoo your partners name on you, do it to protect yourself, Look up their name on the net and translate their name into a chinese symbol, or get a symbol that remind you of them, something other then their physical name

There could be several valid reasons for getting one's name tattooed on oneself. Do you drink alcohol? You might need a reminder as to your identity. Are you a dangerous driver? Tattooing your name to each of your various body parts could aid morgue employees in the event of accident. And of course, a tattoo is a great second form of identification; you should also tattoo your social-security number below your name.

Don't let anyone talk you out of it.

It's not a great idea unless the name itself can be altered into a new word should you break up with your bf (if it's his name) or whatever doesn't work out. For example, if your boyfriend's name is Shan and you get it tattooed on your *** and you break up, you can go back and get a really cool new one made out of the word that says "Shanghai Knights" or something like that. =)

Maybe not THAT but you get the picture...

My man (who's name happens to be Shan) wants me to get his name tattooed on my butt but I'm not gonna do it.

I have my name and my daughters name in a heart. What's dumb about that?

Tattoo's have different meanings to different people. Don't assume stupidity, many people have tattoos with way crazier things then just names.

I would personally never have it done. I mean, like you mentioned, it's there for life, but also, I know relationships have this uncanny way of ending.

My stepfather has his first wife's name tattooed on his chest, my mother, thank god, was indifferent towards it.

I always thought it was a bold and couragous move, it seems very loyal and dedicated and trusting.
Yet there's always the chance of it ending.

Well, i've personally always been against putting someone's name as a tattoo. But if it's someone you truly care for, there are other ways to show it in a tattoo. You can get their nickname as a character, or use kanji to symbolize it.

A tattoo depends on what it means to you...I mean, hey, it can't be any worst than tattooing a significant other's name on you. At least your name will never change...your b/f might and probably will.

You said "one's name on oneself," right? Meaning getting your own name on your own body???

I did years ago. What I did was get the name in a heart all done in red. That way I though I could get it filled in red if I had too. I actually ended up getting a butterfly over it, and I love it.

I think you just answered your own question in a way. No matter what anyone of us says, it's really you who is going to live with having this on your body for the rest of your life. Is this something you want? If you want it there, then it's really your decision because you're ultimately the one who's going to be with it for the rest of your life.
