In the primary, you elect the candidates from one party to run in the general election.

In the primary you can only vote for people in the party that you are registered to (Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, etc) The winners of that election represent their parties in the general election, which is the final one. For instance if Hillary Clinton won the primary she would win her parties nomination to represent the Democrats in the general Election against whoever won the Republican and other party nominations.

In a primary election, each party elects who will run for them in the general election. In other words, the Democrats choose who their candidate will be and the Republicans choose who their candidate will be. Then the two who got picked run against each other in the general election.

Example: In 2004, there were several people who wanted to run against George Bush as the Democratic candidate for President. For example, there was Howard Dean, John Edwards, John Kerry, Joe Lieberman and others. So people who were registered as Democrats voted in the primary election. They chose Kerry, so Kerry ran against Bush in the general election.

In most cases, only Democrats vote in Democratic primary and Republicans vote in a Republican primary.
