In the USA Standard measurement system, why do we bother with the term "half-pint?" Why don't we just use "cup?"

It depends on what is being measured. If it is normally referred to as pint then you the customer would want to know what 1/2 pint of milk is compared to a pint. That way while you are at the grocery, you don't have to break out your conversion chart.
