Why do people take drugs, drink, get high, get drunk, knowing the consequences of that choice is more times than not devasting. Also no one has ever been able to claim that taking drugs has attributed to any success in life, why still do people seem to gravitate to drugs and seek escape through drinking?

I think this type of person lacks self worth and self respect, which probably relates to the way they were brought up, some children are mentally, physically or sexually abused and they are told, from a young age that they are useless and will never achieve anything. They are told these negative things so often that they actually believe them. We all like praise and this is especially true of children, I believe the drink and drugs help them get through each day and probably momentarily give them the confidence they lack.

1) peer pressure: some still think it is cool to engage in those behaviors.

2) to cope with life: some people find that engaging in those behaviors numbs the pain of life and reality. It does not solve any problems but it is a way of avoiding dealing with them. They know this but get sucked in and let the drug control them. If they were to stop, they would have to deal with their life; they don't want to have to deal with their life.

They know the consequences of doing these things but they think that have long since stopped living in reality and they are unable to look at themselves for the losers that they have become.

Why do little kids spin around until they're so dizzy they fall? It's in our nature to alter our reality.

Andrew Weil writes: "In fact, to my knowledge, the only people lacking a traditional intoxicant are the Eskimos, who had the misfortune to be unable to grow anything and had to wait for the white men to bring them alcohol."

I blame the environment they were maturing in. Most that I know have tried it because it was an option, they were bored/curious, or the world is so bleak the only way to numb it is to enter semi-consciousness. I feel pity for them right up to the second they harm someone else.

Because it's like taking short vacation from yourself...and you don't have to get a full body cavity search to get on a plane to get high.

Apparently you have never taken drugs, gotten drunk or high...
You would have to have been there...
It certainly can be done to excess but it can also be done safely
and with pleasure...
